On-the-go breakfast
Published 2/6/2008
A good breakfast provides a healthy start to the day. A number of studies suggest that children who skip breakfast tend to be fatter than those who don't. And there's some evidence that eating breakfast improves kids' learning ability.
But the reality is that many kids do skip breakfast altogether, or eat unhealthy convenience foods instead. In response to this Sanitarium recently introduced Curios, an on-the-go breakfast snack. Its designed to be a healthier alternative to things like chips and chocolates, for kids who eat breakfast on the run.
Do your kids sit down to a healthy breakfast? Or would they eat an on-the-go breakfast alternative?

Each morning my children have porridge. Keeps us going longer. Some mornings one just wants cereal - hard to find a low sugar, low GI alternative. Not a great Weetbix fan these days - any other suggestions?

Have you tried boiled eggs?

Regardless of how time poor we are, I ALWAYS make sure my kids have something nutritious to eat in the mornings. Even if it nothing but a piece of fruit or a yoghurt. All these foods for 'kids on the run' are ridiculous. Surely they are all higher in sugar, fat & salt than an apple? And what ever happened to the good old piece of vegemite toast??!!

Baked Beans are our rock solid staple. My son has a peanut allergy so any cereal - let alone healthy ones, are hard to find. Baked beans do have sugar, but I try to limit the sauce and they're quick to prepare. When he does get cereal it's fruity bites- they have moderate fibre.

My 4.5 yr old will eat toast brown or white or a muffin with vegemite. My 20mth old likes sultana bran and also has two slices of toast with vegemite sometimes also eats a banana. A great start for both...the easiest of my meals by far!!

I would say, generally, kids don't have time, especially if they need to walk / ride a bike to school or the bus stop. I haven't tried curios yet, but I'm afraid if they may have trouble digesting it if it is on-the-go.

3/4 of my kids eat at least one breakfast every day, the 4th eats most days but will sometimes run out the door to school with an apple and a banana. They also have 'healthy snack time' midway to morning recess, when they are allowed to eat fruit.

For those out there that have not tried CURIOS, I have, and I was astounded by the taste and amount of sugar this product contains!! Not only does it discount MILK from the standard breakfast (because we all know growing bodies don't need MILK in their diet!??????) but it teaches children that it is okay to eat what looks and feel like a packet of sugary chips for breakfast. Sanitarium does some great things in the community and with cereals, but CURIOS is DEFINATELY NOT one of them! With the range of flavours availble, would it have killed Sanitatium to have made at least ONE variety that did not taste like sugar on sugar? This seems like a product Kellogg's would have devloped. Upset and dissapointed dietitian.
