What we say

Its pack declares that SANITARIUM Weet-Bix Crunch Honey is '69% whole grains'. 'Whole grain' is the latest catch-phrase in breakfast cereals. Whole grain foods are usually minimally processed and contain more of the natural constituents found in the grain than refined foods. These include vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (these may provide protection against some cancers and heart disease). Use the ingredients list rather than front of pack claims to separate marketing hype from fact –– if the first ingredient listed is whole grain then it's more likely to include these nutrients. And the greater the percentage, the better.

SANITARIUM Weet-Bix Crunch Honey is a good source of dietary fibre, providing an eight-year-old with 18% of their recommended daily intake in one 35 g serve. The downside is that it's almost 30% sugar –– and not much of that is coming from the honey either (only 2% of the cereal is honey). Kids will love the bite-sized pieces, so if you can't get them to eat a plainer version of whole-wheat cereal, it's not a bad option, even given the sugar content.
