What we say

The figures above are based on a serve of NESTLÉ Milo (25g, or around four heaped teaspoons) mixed with 250mL (a cup) of reduced fat (1.4%) milk as directed.

The two key features of MILO promoted on its packaging are its 'Low GI for slow release energy' and its '6 essential vitamins and minerals'. But milk is low GI naturally, so this claim is more of a feature of the milk, rather than the added MILO powder. And while a glass of MILO with milk gives you '50% of your daily needs' of calcium, around three quarters of this comes from the milk itself. However it's the MILO that contributes most of the vitamin A, B1 and B2 and all of the iron and vitamin C.

It certainly doesn’t hurt to have the extra boost of vitamins and minerals, but children eating a healthy and varied diet will easily get adequate amounts of these nutrients from foods. And don't be tempted to add more than the recommended four heaped teaspoons of MILO to your kids milk if you're trying to limit their sugar intake.
